Beware of White Fly Damage to Ficus Hedges

We have a new pest in the South Florida area known as the ficus whitefly or the Singhiella simplex. The insect feeds on the underside of leaves and maintains its life cycles on the ficus trees or hedges. The insect can completely destroy ficus plants as shown below if not properly maintained. Control this insect with an application of a chemical containing a neonicotinoid compound applied around the base of the ficus every four to eight months to help prevent an infestation. If an infestation hot spot has occurred, use a foliar spray like Merit or Bayer for an initial treatment and then a second treatment 7-10 days later while beginning the base chemical with neonicotinoid every four to eight months to completely contain and eliminate further problems.
